The club

In recognition of its activity, the Compagnia della Vela was awarded with the Silver Star for sporting merits by CONI in 1990 and, in 1995, received the Gold Star for sporting merits directly from the hands of the President of the Italian Republic Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, for the important results achieved in its history and for the excellent level of preparation demonstrated in the organization of very important sporting events.

Lastly, the Italian National Olympic Committee granted the Compagnia della Vela with its highest honor, the Golden Collar for Sporting Merit. This prize, which recognizes the Club’s remarkable role in promoting and spreading sport and Olympic values, is even more appreciable as it was awarded in the same year in which it was 100 years old.

In 1992 with Il Moro di Venezia of Raul Gardini, club member, the Club won the Louis Vuitton Cup and challenged the Defender in the America’s Cup in the bay of San Diego, and, for this reason, the Compagnia della Vela was invited to attend in August 2001 the
America’s Cup Jubilee in Cowes, England, an event organized by the Royal Yacht Squadron and the New York Yacht Club to celebrate 150 years of the America’s Cup.
In 2011, the Compagnia della Vela celebrated its 100 anniversary; on that occasion, it opened the new head office on the San Giorgio’s Island of Venice, which represents a milestone of the current life of the Club.

Since its establishment, the Compagnia della Vela had a very close relationships with the Italian Navy, so much so that it had the privilege of adding the Royal Crown Guild in the club burgee and hoisting the National War Flag. According to the bylaws, honorary
members of the Compagnia della Vela are the Commander in Chief of the Navy in Venice, the Commander of the Port of Venice, the Commander of the Naval Military School Francesco Morosini and the President of the Giorgio Cini Foundation.
The current President of the Compagnia della Vela is Giuseppe Duca, a Venetian lawyer.
